Castmill, a digital signage software platform, has announced Castmill 2.0 will launch as open source software, along with featuring extensive overhaul and updates leveraging over a decade of insight from previous versions, according to a statement released by CEO Manuel Astudillo.
“What makes Castmill 2.0 truly special is our decision to open source it,” Astudillo said in the statement. “This move aligns with our belief in the power of community and shared innovation. By providing the digital signage community with access to our code, we aim to empower others to contribute, innovate and benefit from our platform.”
The release prioritizes security, reliability, scalability and enterprise-grade management along with providing extensible and interoperable solutions.
“The world of Digital Signage is packed with lots of different options, so it might seem pointless to add another one,” Astudillo continued. “However, we aren’t satisfied with what’s currently available, including our own software. That’s why we feel it’s worth putting in the work. At the moment, there’s a lot of duplicated effort creating similar software to tackle the same problem, with varying levels of success. We believe it would be better if there was a free, open solution that’s so good no one would feel the need to create another one.”
