On August 23, rocker Glenn Hughes performed Deep Purple hits and songs from the “Burn” album at The Paramount in Huntington.
This summer marked the 50th anniversary of the release of the Deep Purple seminal album “Burn.” He co-headlined this show with the Swedish guitar player Yngwie Malmsteen.
Glenn Hughes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 as a member of Deep Purple, which is a band that is credited for being harbingers of hard rock, thus paving the way for metal groups with their breakneck style.
Hughes’ live band was comprised of such musicians as Soren Andersen on guitar, Ash Sheehan on the drums, and Ed Roth on the keyboards. They warmed up the stage for Yngwie Malmsteen.
Affectionately known as the “Voice of Rock,” Hughes began his Paramount show with “Stormbringer,” where he showcased his piercing high notes. He went on to express his gratitude to the audience and immediately broke into the mid-tempo “Might Just Take Your Life,” which displayed his whistle register, especially towards the end.
He interacted with the crowd and went on to perform “Sail Away,” and it was followed by the powerhouse tune “Mistreated,” which was sheer bliss. Things got a little bit crazy during “Getting’ Tighter,” and Hughes closed with “You Keep on Moving.”
Encore
For his encore, Hughes returned to the Paramount stage, and he performed the up-tempo “Highway Star” and “Burn,” the latter of which received a raucous response.
Once again, he reiterated his appreciation to the fans for coming out and supporting rock music.
The only downside was that they didn’t get to do “Smoke on the Water,” which has always been a perennial fan-favorite Deep Purple recording.
The Verdict
Overall, Glenn Hughes and his band soared at The Paramount on Long Island. They were able to deliver an intimate set of Deep Purple’s classic hits, and it was evident that they gave it their all for the fans.
Hughes’ talent and vocal range is quite impressive, and the riffs were memorable as well. To this day, Hughes possesses one of the most powerful voices in the contemporary rock genre along with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge.
