Actress and voiceover artist Benni Latham chatted about “Transformers: EarthSpark” on Paramount+.
On being a part of this Paramount+ series, she said, “My experience with ‘Transformers: EarthSpark’ is nothing short of incredible. Being a voice actor is already a childhood dream come true, but being part of a franchise that I grew up with is even more amazing.”
“I am honored to work with such a wonderfully talented cast and crew at a network
that I have admired since I was a kid,” she said.
“Being welcomed and embraced by the Transformer fandom is very humbling because I’m also a fan of this franchise. I love that we get to nerd out with one another,” she added.
Daily inspirations as a voiceover artist
On her daily inspirations as a voiceover actress, she said, “What inspires me as a voice actress is the joy I feel when I get to play around with different characters in the booth.”
“Voice acting is liberating in that there is no limit to who or what I can be,” she admitted. “The only limitation is my imagination. Being able to tap into my inner child and create new characters is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my job.”
Future plans
Regarding her future plans, she said, “My future plans are to continue on the path I’m on as a voice actor and expand into other creative outlets. I also plan to explore television and film and see where that journey takes me. I may even try my hand at
writing the types of shows I’d like to see. The future is limitless.”
The digital age
Latham opened up about being a voiceover actress in the digital age, now with streaming, technology and social media being so prevalent.
“Being a voiceover actor in the digital age is fascinating because the industry is constantly changing. The process has changed as voice actors went from going into the studio and recording to downloading software and performing from home,” she said.
“I recorded the entire first season of Transformers: EarthSpark from my closet,” she admitted. “I did my first table read with the cast on Zoom. As much as I love the accessibility and convenience of working from home, I miss connecting with my fellow actors face to face.”
“There is so much magic in recording with other actors in the room. I’m learning to embrace the new technology and to find creative ways of performing remotely,” she added.
Advice for hopefuls in voiceover
For young and aspiring voiceover artists, she said, “My advice for young and aspiring actors is to study your craft and learn as much as you can about the industry. I took lots of acting and improv classes to help me improve my skills as an actor.”
“Voice acting isn’t just about making funny voices, but rather creating characters. Acting and improv classes prepare you for tapping into your creativity which in turn helps you to enhance the dialogue you are given,” she said.
Career-defining moments
On her career-defining moments, she shared, “One of the most defining moments of my career happened before my professional career began. I was a TSA agent at LAX airport from 2006 to 2016.”
“On November 1, 2013 someone came to the airport and shot at the crowd while specifically targeting TSA agents. One of my coworkers was mortally wounded and a few more were injured. That moment was a wakeup call for me.
“Realizing how precious life is gave me the courage to make a life changing decision to quit my job at the TSA. I decided that I owed it to myself to try my hand at a childhood goal which led me to rediscovering voice acting,” she added.
Success
On her definition of the word success, she said, “Success means having a healthy quality of life while being able to do what you love for a living. When you discover your passion and joy and are able to make a living at what you love, life is more joyous.”
“Joy can be a beautiful motivator because the more you focus on it the more it amplifies. I am grateful to be able to make a living by doing what brings me joy,” she added.
Closing thoughts on ‘Transformers: EarthSpark’
Latham remarked, “One thing I would love for people to get out of ‘Transformers:
EarthSpark’ is the joy of seeing themselves reflected in the stories they
love. We all love watching our heroes fighting bad guys and saving the
day, but seeing those same heroes fighting alongside people that look like
us makes these stories accessible.”
“Better still, watching people who look like us become heroes themselves is gratifying. As someone born and raised in the city of Compton, California I would have loved to see someone with locs fighting alongside Megatron or seeing a disabled person discover a new secret power,” she elaborated.
“Transformers: EarthSpark is special in that it balances storytelling with inclusion while still keeping the heart and adventure we enjoy,” she concluded.
