Actress, singer, and pianist Alicia Witt chatted about her new EP “Witness,” which will be released on Friday, August 25.
She opened up about the digital age, and she recalled her experience on “The Masked Singer.”
‘Witness’ EP
On the song selection process for “Witness,” she said, “I already knew that I wanted to release the song ‘Witness.’ It was written in 2022, and it was probably the longest process that I’ve taken to write a song. It was so important to me, and I wanted every word to feel 100 percent true to what my experience had been.”
“I wanted to do honor to those that were my witnesses,” she said. “Then, I was working on ‘The Masked Singer’ and I knew that I wanted to have some new music by the time my unmasking episode aired.”
She noted that four of the songs on the EP had been written a few weeks before she recorded them, and that is “very unusual.” “It was a very fast process,” she admitted.
“I love that ’90s piano ballad vibe,” she admitted.
On her personal favorite song on the EP, she remarked, “I love each of the six songs for completely different reasons. I chose them all for specific reasons, and they all fit the theme of ‘Witness.’ They are all so new and they all make me smile. ‘Clever Mind’ is the only exception because I wrote that eight years ago.”
‘The Masked Singer’
She described her experience in the reality singing competition “The Masked Singer” as “life-changing.” “It was a fun, silly, and entertaining show,” she said.
“Just connecting with that voice was all that mattered. It was profound thing to have the gift of singing without any of your features being seen. I couldn’t really see anything either through my mask,” she said with a sweet laugh.
“Being able to sing ‘Over the Rainbow’ by Judy Garland and being able to connect with all 500 people in that room, and feeling like it was just me and each one of them, and knowing that I reached them was very special,” she elaborated.
“That particular song has deep, lifelong meaning to me and I’m grateful that nobody had sung that before,” she said about “Over the Rainbow.”
“I was able to communicate with them better at that moment than in any conversation. It forever changed the way I think about singing. It has freed me up as a singer in ways that still get me really emotional,” she added.
The digital age
On being an artist in the digital age, now with streaming, technology, and social media being so prevalent, she said, “I love it but I am aware that I am blessed to have another career, which has funded my music. I am very grateful that I break even with my music, which is a win for an independent artist but it has taken many years to get to that point.”
“What is great about streaming that artists can agree with is that their music is being heard all over the globe at any given moment. Someone in Iceland is listening to my music at this very moment, and I may never know who that is, but should I make it to Iceland someday to the show, there will probably be people that would come to that show, and that’s bananas,” she elaborated.
“I think it’s a great thing. You may not make as much money but you make fans that way, and you spread your music, so I love it. I am a big fan of streaming,” she added.
Stage of her life
On the title of the current chapter of her life, Witt said, “Rebirth.” “It’s a good time to be here right now,” she said.
Christmas Con in Kansas
She discussed being a part of the Christmas Con event in Kansas this past June, where she was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit the Hallmark headquaters office in Kansas.
“We got a tour of the original Hallmark headquarters where it all began. In terms of the experience, it was definitely an incredible experience because I had a great time with the whole Hallmark crew,” she said.
“I had fantastic conversations with so many of the other actors. It was very joyful,” she added.
Success
Regarding her definition of the word success, Witt said, “Success means joy, health, feeling present and enjoying each of these moments. Also, sharing what this music means to me so hopefully more people can be reached by it.”
“I hope listeners and fans listen to ‘Witness’ from top to bottom, and listen without any expectation of what it’s going to be. I hope they put their own stories to it, and I hope it means something profound to them,” she concluded.
