Actor and musician Ashton Arbab (“General Hospital” and “Fear The Walking Dead” fame) chatted about his latest family movie “Powder Pup.”
The synopsis is: Shaun (played by Ashton Arbab) is a Southern California surfer. His father’s plan to move to mountains of Montana crushes him up until he meets a dog who can snowboard. With the help of his canine friend, he is set to make a run for the annual snowboarding championship.
Arbab stars opposite such actors as Rib Hillis, Jay Mohr, and Mike Manning, among others. “This movie was really good,” he admitted. “We filmed it two years ago in Montana. We show for 1.5 to 2 months, and it was really good. The whole cast was amazing. It was really fun to see the final product finally.”
“Rib Hillis, who played my father is a great guy, and Mike Manning is awesome. We’ve known each other for a bit, and Mike is also a fellow soap opera star, so that’s really cool, and we bonded over that,” he said.
“I hope fans and viewers check out ‘Powder Pup.’ It’s a fun family movie. I think it’s for all ages. We have the snowboarding factor and a talking dog; who doesn’t love that? The cast is just awesome, and it’s a really entertaining and funny family film,” he said.
The digital age
On being a performer in the digital age, Arbab said, “It’s cool. Streaming is a huge factor in today’s generation because everything is streamed. You can watch things as many times as you want, so the fact that this movie got the chance to go to streaming was great because anyone can watch it.”
“You don’t need to go to a movie theater or go anywhere out of your way to watch something,” he added.
‘General Hospital’ experience
Arbab recalled his time on the ABC daytime drama “General Hospital,” which afforded him the chance to work with such actors as three-time Emmy winner Maurice Benard, as well as Emmy nominee William Lipton and Johnny Wactor (who played his fictitious onscreen father Brando Corbin).
Arbab played the role of Dev Cerci, and he noted that people still stop him on the street for that. “I still get recognized, and they are like ‘you’re Dev from General Hospital’,” he said with a sweet laugh.
Working with Maurice Benard
“Being a part of ‘General Hospital’ was a really good experience,” he noted. “It was a great learning environment for me as an actor because I had a lot of scenes with Maurice Benard.”
“With Maurice Benard as my mentor on the show, I learned so much from him,” he admitted. “Also, I love the work that he does with his MB ‘State of Mind’ podcast.”
“Working with Johnny Wactor was so cool too,” he exclaimed. “Johnny is such a nice guy; he is awesome. I saw him at the ‘General Hospital’ fan event that they had with the ‘Past Cast.’ We got to catch up and talk there, so that was really fun.”
Advice for young and aspiring actors
For young and aspiring actors, he encouraged them to “never give up on their dreams.” “Even if you hear a ‘no’ or if you get a rejection, just keep going since everybody gets their turn,” he said.
“You just need to believe and have faith,” he added.
Stage of his life
On the title of the current chapter of his life, he revealed, “One Step Closer.”
New short movie: ‘Off My Shoulders’
“Right now, I actually wrote, directed and I am producing one of my own films, and I am doing a festival run. It’s a short I created called ‘Off My Shoulders.’ I am also playing the lead in it as well. I wrote it with my friend Michael Moroso and we both produced it.”
“The short is about a young boy who faces addiction and mental health problems because of the loss of his brother who died in a car accident; however, he has a fallen angel and an angel on his shoulders and they are both pushing him in two different directions,” he said.
“I feel that mental health is an important topic these days, and it is not talked as much as it should be because it’s a huge factor in life. Everyone deals with mental health problems such as anxiety and depression,” he elaborated.
“I’ve had my own problems with mental health as well, so if I can show the younger generation and the older generation — and anyone that needs to see it — that they can persevere and get through it, then that’s my goal at the end of the day,” he acknowledged.
Future plans
Arbab, who is also a singer, revealed that he has new music in the works, and he hopes to have that out in the near future.
Success
Arbab defined the word success simply as “comfortability.” “If you are comfortable in what you are doing, and you are happy, then you are successful,” he explained.
