The Cheslatta Carrier Nation and the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako have ordered evacuations due to the Wells Creek wildfire.

The orders cover all properties along Ootsa Lake Road including Petkau Road, Marilla Road, St. Marys Pit Road, to the Marilla Main FSR, including IR 1, and Parcel 11 (East Ootsa Charlie Reserve).

Evacuation orders for a total of 50 properties in West Kelowna and two other British Columbia wildfire areas were lifted Saturday and downgraded to alert status.

This means dozens of people in the Kamloops, Shuswap, and Kelowna areas can return to their homes, but should still be prepared to leave on short notice, regional fire officials said, CTV News reports.

There are currently 405 properties on evacuation order and 20,011 on evacuation alert in the West Kelowna area.

While the south is trending towards more fall-like conditions,  Erika Berg from the BCWS said the weather could be drier than anticipated this weekend, which may cause flare-ups, according to CBC Canada News.

“With several days of hot and dry conditions, we were forecasting that fuels would be really [receptive] to high spread when those winds come in. That is what we did see on some of our large incidents in those regions.”

“We are transitioning into fall out of the peak of summer,” she said. “But this wildfire season is not over yet.”

As of September 2, 2023, 6,112 fires had burned 161,289 square kilometers (62,274 sq miles; 39,855,000 acres), about four percent of the entire forest area of Canada and more than six times the long-term average of 2.64 million hectares (6.5 million acres) for that time of the year.

On September 2, 2023, there were 1,074 wildfires active wildfires burning in Canada, and 700 of those were deemed “out of control.” International aid has helped reduce the impact of the fires.[
