Pop artist ALLEGRA chatted about her new single “Fish Out of Water,” and being a part of the digital age.

Idea for the song ‘Fish Out of Water’

On the origin of the song “Fish Out of Water,” she said, “In 2020, my childhood friend lost her best friend in the pandemic.”

“The kid was so young and it impacted me in ways I couldn’t understand. I started writing, and a love letter to my childhood friend in the perspective of her best friend flooded out of me,” she said.

Vocally, the listener can recall Ariana Grande meets the late Aaliyah; moreover, it has a retro R&B/soul vibe to it. Her voice is crisp and crystalline on this track.

The digital age

On being an artist in the digital age, at a time when streaming, technology and social media are so prevalent, she said, “It feels great. I love what I do.”

“I love connecting with the world and my followers. I just want to make an impact and entertain. I understand the business and the digital age, but I focus on my tasks at hand. One step at a time,” she said.

Music and songwriting inspirations

Regarding her music and songwriting inspirations, ALLEGRA said, “Day to day life, my experiences, a sound I produce with an instrument, everything really.”

“I’ve been writing music since I was very little so it’s what I know. Obviously, I have different perspectives as I age but it all love,” she said.

For her fans and listeners, she remarked about “Fish Out of Water, “I want them to interpret it as they please. This song has themes of loss, friendship, and suicide.”

“I wrote this for my friend but I feel like so many people have similar experiences. I want them to know that it does get better and I send them a sonic hug,” she said.
