“Chasing Chasing Amy” is an enticing new documentary that was written and directed by Sav Rodgers.

This documentary had its world premiere on June 8 at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. It explores the complex legacy of Kevin Smith’s seminal film “Chasing Amy” from 1997 on LGBTQ+ people and its life-saving impact on filmmaker Sav Rodgers.

When Rodgers sets out to understand the ’90s LGBTQ+ rom-com that saved his life, he is forced to confront complicated truths of his own, that will change who he is forever.

He first saw the movie as a 12-year-old queer kid from Kansas, it was an integral part of his coming of age story, especially in terms of his sexual identity.

Rodgers is able to fuse elements of the original “Chasing Amy” together coupled with his own complex life, and it showcases that the relationships we have with the films we grow up with can be complicated as well.

It is story from an intriguing and unique perspective. It reassures the notion that life is not about finding your heroes, it is about finding yourself, and rightfully so.

The Verdict

With “Chasing Chasing Amy,” Sav Rodgers is able to take the audience with him on his journey of self-discovery. It is evident that once Rodgers scrutinizes the movie as a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ cinema, he finds himself at a complicated crossroads.

This documentary is just as authentic and honest as the iconic film “Chasing Amy,” which inspired it. “Chasing Chasing Amy” garners four out of five stars. Well done.
