“The Bell Keeper,” starring Randy Couture and Mike Manning, is a new horror thriller, which was directed by Colton Tran.
Aside from Manning and Couture, it Kathleen Kenny, Reid Miller, Bonnie Aarons, and Chaz Bono.
The screenplay was co-written by Joe Davison and Luke Genton, and it was released on Friday, October 13.
The synopsis is: A group of friends goes to a campsite in order to film a documentary. It has a mysterious bell that summons a murderer if you ring it at midnight.
Their plan to debunk the myth goes awry as they discover that the truth is far more frightening than fiction.
MMA fighter Randy Couture delivers a commanding performance as the nefarious Hank, who is out for blood.
Mike Manning (Matthew), Cathy Marks (Holly), Capri-Antoine Vaillancourt (Gabriel), and Alexis B. Santiago (Megan) do a solid job playing the group of friends.
Reid Miller is also a triumph as Liam, and he works well opposite Kathleen Kenny, who portrays Brittany.
Bonnie Aarons (“The Nun” franchise) is a revelation as Jodie, while Chaz Bono also appears as Sheriff Carlson.
While the screenplay may be mediocre and inconsistent at times (especially in the sophisticated scenes), the actors make the best out of what they have; moreover, it throws a few clever twists and turns in the plot, which certainly stirs things up.
It bears to mention that it has several flaws. The suspense doesn’t always build up, not every character is given their own distinct characterization, and the CGI doesn’t always serve the overall effect.
On a more positive note, it has a retro slasher thriller vibe to it, where the viewer can recall “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” with elements of “Final Destination,” and it is neat to witness that resurgence in contemporary cinema.
The Verdict
For the most part, “The Bell Keeper” is engaging, and director Colton Tran is able to bring in a form of escapism to the audience watching it in theaters and On Demand.
Tran’s zest for the horror movie genre is evident in this motion picture. Grab some popcorn and enjoy this horror flick, which came out on Friday the 13th. “The Bell Keeper” is worth checking out, and it garners a B rating.
