While we are learning to live in the “new normal” post-pandemic world, political drama of historical consequence is being played out in our country. As if it were the audience in a Greek tragedy, our nation is mesmerized (and paralyzed) by the unfolding fate of its protagonists, by the horrors of betrayals and intrigues. Key actors in this play, Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, disguised as Democrats, delivered a final blow to the Democrats’ project of building on FDR’s legacy of making the country both prosperous and human (”Sinema opposes filibuster changes,” Jan. 14). President Biden, true to his role as the tragic king, refused to call the deception and so became an accomplice as well as victim to the Trump-controlled GOP grab for unrestricted power and demise of democracy. Any applause?
